Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

The recently celebrated Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is held on 9 January every year to mark the contribution of overseas Indians in the development of India. The decision to celebrate Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was taken by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The main reason for this is that on 9 January 1915, Mahatma Gandhi, the largest expatriate, returned to India from South Africa, led the freedom struggle of India and developed a collective consciousness and nationalist spirit among Indians. That is why January 9 was chosen to organize Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

The first Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was held on 9 January 2003 in New Delhi. The theme of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas this year is 'Contribution to Self-reliant India'. The main objective of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is to provide a platform to the achievements of the overseas Indian community and bring them to the world. At the same time, this day also provides a platform for NRIs to express their thoughts, feelings and positive interactions with their countrymen.
